Optimal Local Decompression on Graphs of Odd Maximum Degree
Abstract
An arbitrary subset of the edges of a communication graph can be stored as short vertex labels, provided a distributed decoder can recover each incident edge’s membership from a bounded neighborhood. Balliu, Brandt, Kuhn, Nowicki, Olivetti, Rotenberg and Suomela asked whether two bits per vertex suffice on cubic graphs. We answer this question affirmatively. More generally, for every fixed odd maximum-degree bound Δ ≥ 3, every edge subset of every graph of maximum degree at most Δ has a locally decodable encoding with exactly (Δ + 1)/2 bits per vertex. This uniform integer budget is optimal by counting, and decoding takes Δ^{O(Δ)} rounds in the LOCAL model. The construction uses the authors’ one-bit advice scheme for almost-balanced orientations. Separated marker vertices define bounded cells; nonmarker labels encode both a quotient-orientation advice bit and the membership bits of the edges owned by the cell. Reserving one of four labels as a marker leaves three data symbols, whose rate exceeds the cubic edge density. The orientation advice is decoded before ownership, avoiding a circular encoding. The encoder is unrestricted and the result is a locality theorem, with no claim of practical constants.
Contribution
Achieves the optimal uniform integer budget of (Δ + 1)/2 bits per vertex for local edge-subset decoding at odd maximum degree Δ ≥ 3, including two bits for cubic graphs.
Formalization scope
partialWhat Lean checks
Eight selected Lean statements prove storage-capacity inequalities, an advice-first codec, the complete-graph counting lower bound, bounded connected-cell geometry and stability, and a conditional uniform finite-view reconstruction theorem. For k ≥ 2, given a total finite-view orientation rule with the stated one-bit advice guarantee, one decoder family is chosen before graph order, topology, markers, advice and payload. On connected graphs on Fin n with n > 16(k + 1), maximum degree at most 2k − 1, canonical identifiers and public order n, an encoding using k bits per vertex allows the decoder to recover every edge bit at either endpoint. The same decoder has a radius independent of graph order on arbitrary labels across any two connected graphs of the same order and across marker patterns.
What it does not check
The published orientation algorithm and its normalization to the formal interface remain external; the premise supplies only a sufficient one-sided outdegree guarantee. Computability, a polynomial bound on the oracle radius, and executable LOCAL-machine semantics are not formalized. The assembled theorem specializes to canonical identifiers and sufficiently large connected graphs; the paper’s final assembly over small and disconnected components remains informal. The formal radius is conservative and exceeds the paper’s stated bound. The complete-graph lower bound establishes the storage requirement for the full graph class, not a matching lower bound within the restricted large-connected recovery domain.
This scope is reconciled with the hosted manuscript and pinned project README. The mathematical statements and assumptions in the source determine what the formalization establishes; manuscript revisions may clarify the interpretation of the same proof artifact.
